Shadows on the 8-Thousanders: Climate Change, Fragile Peaks, and the Tragedy of Broad Peak & the Ruthless God of Death
Global warming is casting an undeniable and alarming shadow over Gilgit-Baltistan, one of the world’s most glacier-rich mountain regions outside the polar areas. Rising temperatures are profoundly altering the environment, disrupting local communities, agriculture, tourism, and essential water resources.
Nowhere is this fragile transformation more visible – or more dangerous – than on the majestic slopes of Pakistan’s high-altitude ranges. As the world mourns the tragic loss of lives in the devastating avalanche on Broad Peak, mountaineering experts and communities are confronting a stark reality: the roof of the world is changing faster than ever before.
The Escalating Crisis of Global Warming in Gilgit-Baltistan
The environmental shifts across Gilgit-Baltistan present a multifaceted threat to the region:
- Rapid glacier melting: Many glaciers are retreating rapidly as temperatures rise, dramatically increasing the risk of sudden floods.
- Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs): Melting glaciers form unstable lakes that can burst without warning, heavily damaging villages, roads, bridges, and farmland.
- Unpredictable weather: Hotter summers, irregular snowfall, and shifting rainfall patterns are becoming increasingly common.
- Water availability: While glacier melt initially increases water flow, shrinking glaciers threaten long-term water supplies.
- Agriculture: Farmers face shifting growing seasons, water shortages, and severe crop damage from extreme weather.
- Tourism and mountaineering: Trekking routes, glaciers, and climbing conditions are shifting, creating unprecedented challenges for guides and visitors.
- Biodiversity: Alpine plants and wildlife are under mounting pressure as their natural habitats change.
Unraveling Mountains: The Mechanics of Modern Danger
Climbers in the Karakoram range are witnessing hazards that previous generations encountered far less frequently. The mountains are not necessarily becoming less beautiful, but they are growing vastly more “fragile” and “unpredictable.”
1. The Freeze-Thaw Cycle and Rockfalls
Over recent years, winters have brought far less snowfall, leaving many 8,000-meter peaks with massive exposed rock sections during the climbing season. This degradation is heavily driven by the “freeze-thaw cycle.” During the day, rising temperatures melt the ice binding rocks together. At night, water freezes and expands inside cracks, gradually tearing the mountain apart. This creates loose rocks that can fall hundreds or thousands of meters with little to no warning.
A single falling rock can be fatal; a danger tragically underscored by the loss of renowned climber Murad Sadpara, who was struck on the head by a falling rock while descending Broad Peak.
2. Shifting Icefalls and Crevasses
The structural integrity of the mountains is failing. Icefalls and seracs on Broad Peak that once primarily collapsed toward K2 are now increasingly breaking toward the Concordia side. Furthermore, shrinking glaciers expose loose rock locked in ice for centuries, creating unstable slopes. Crevasses are becoming larger and more frequent, and snow bridges that once remained stable throughout the season are now dangerously thin and weak.
3. Wild Weather and Shifting Windows
Traditional climbing windows are collapsing. Routes considered safe a decade ago now turn treacherous much earlier in the season because ice and snow melt at accelerated rates. Climbers face sudden snowstorms, high winds, rapid temperature changes, and volatile conditions that defy traditional forecasting.
As experts aptly note, “No one can accurately predict when or where an avalanche will occur. Mountaineering has always involved risk, but climate change is making these mountains far more unpredictable & dangerous than they once were. Even the world’s best climbers cannot eliminate these objective hazards; they can only try to manage them.”
Warning Signs on the Mountain: David Klein and Ian Overton’s Perspective
By the final week of July, warning signs were already glaringly apparent to those paying close attention. David Klein; a Hungarian mountaineer who led his country’s first ascent attempt on Broad Peak in 2000 – and American ER nurse Ian Overton had spent a month living under Pakistan’s 26,414-foot Broad Peak (the world’s twelfth highest peak), having previously tried Nanga Parbat together in winter 2012. Climbing without bottled oxygen and without porters, the two men watched the mountain dramatically change its mood.
In mid-July, Klein noted that conditions were relatively good and that “avalanche danger is low” because most of what could slide had already done so. On July 19, climbing without supplemental oxygen, Klein pushed up the west side for 19 hours, turning around just 50 to 70 vertical meters below the summit after Overton had already descended to base camp due to altitude effects.
However, heavy snowfall beginning around July 22 abruptly halted further attempts. Klein noted, “After lots of snowfall you don’t only want good weather. You want a few days of good weather in which there is no snowfall, but you are not moving because the snow has to do one of two things. It has to stick to the mountain or it has to slide down.” With most teams already departing, Klein and Overton packed up and walked out on July 25. Yet, a handful of teams with summit hopes chose to stay behind.
The Legacy of Nirmal “Nims” Purja and Project Possible
Among those who stayed was the legendary Nirmal “Nims” Purja and his team from Elite Exped. In 2019, after summiting only a handful of the 8,000-meter peaks, the former British soldier in the Special Boat Service set out to break a record previously held by South Korean Kim Chang-ho (seven years and 10 months) by climbing all 14 of them in a single season. Starting on Annapurna on April 23 and finishing on Shishapangma on October 29, Purja completed the feat in just 189 days (six months and six days), calling it Project Possible.
Netflix later captured the journey in the 2021 documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible, making him the first celebrity mountaineer of the streaming era and fundamentally shifting how Himalayan peaks are commercially climbed. Instead of laying siege to a single summit, clients began tackling multiple peaks in rapid succession under the guidance of Purja and his team of Sherpa guides.
While Purja achieved unprecedented fame for a Nepali climber, he also faced criticism for using bottled oxygen, relying on fixed ropes, and climbing trade routes behind elite Sherpa crews; sparking arguments that his achievements were logistical feats solved by a military mind. Seeking to answer his critics, Purja joined nine other Nepali climbers in January 2021 to achieve the “Last Great First”: winter climbing K2 without supplemental oxygen. Reaching the summit, all ten walked the final meters arm in arm, singing Nepal’s national anthem. Purja later remarked, “I knew I had to do this for the country, for the people, and only I could do it the right way.”
The Tragedy of Broad Peak: A Darkest Hour
In an Instagram post published right before the climb, Purja noted that Broad Peak was a late addition to his expedition, explaining that a successful summit would have left him just one mountain shy of becoming the first person to climb all 14 of the 8,000-meter peaks twice without oxygen. He wrote, “Broad Peak, I ask for nothing but safe passage up and back down.” Reflecting on the constant presence of death in high-altitude mountaineering, Purja noted in a 2022 interview, “Death is certain once you are born. I must continue my journey because I have a bigger goal.”
Tragically, those risks materialized on July 30. Live tracking data from Garmin units captured the grim timeline: at 5:33 a.m. local time, Purja’s device pinged at 6,166 meters near Camp 2 as he headed toward Camp 3. Moving along a high ridge, the team had to cross a massive snowpack/glacier gully carrying extreme avalanche risks. Telemetry tracking data and GPS maps confirm that at around 9 a.m., while navigating the upper slopes near 6,660 meters (21,850 feet), an avalanche struck, sweeping ten climbers down the mountain’s main west-facing gully across a vertical drop of up to a mile.
While Elite Exped cofounder Mingma Gyabu Sherpa (Mingma David) initially held out hope because GPS trackers under deep snow can briefly appear to wander or stay active with a speed reading of zero, the signature rapid descent followed by a short northern displacement signaled disaster.
Later reports confirmed the avalanche was massive, unseen by the Broad Peak before – the sheer force of which swept the team from 6,670 meters down to 4,900 and 5,100 meters; To understand the scale, 1,800 to 3,000 meters of fall, a height of 1 and a 1/2 of Burj ul Khalifa and even further. Earlier mountaineers did have limited gear, GPS tech and elite sherpas, but today’s mountaineers have the biggest challenge – that is climate change.
The Alpine Club of Pakistan and expedition teams confirmed that all ten members of the ill-fated group tragically perished. The victims included:
- Nirmal “Nims” Purja and four other Nepalese climbers, including Nima Sherpa and veteran high-altitude worker Pur Bahadur Gurung “Yukta” (who supported historic feats like Jim Morrison’s Hornbein Couloir ski descent).
- Nadhira Al-Harthy, the first Omani woman to summit Everest.
- American climber Mallory Geis.
- Pakistani guide Sohail Sakhi.
- A Chinese climber identified as Mr. Wang, alongside one other foreign climber.
Over the weekend, search and recovery teams retrieved or located the bodies of the victims amidst deeply challenging conditions.
A Call to Action: Defending Our Fragile Roof of the World
The loss of these exceptional climbers sends shockwaves through the global community, reminding everyone of the raw, unforgiving nature of Pakistan’s majestic giants. It echoes a stark truth well-known to those who test their limits against these punishing ranges, famously articulated by Nims himself:
“The Himalayas may be merciful to you, but the Karakorams will not.”
As the global mountaineering community reels from this immense loss, the message from the roof of the world is unmistakable. Climate change is rewriting the rules of high-altitude survival, turning beloved peaks into fragile landscapes where extraordinary skill is no longer enough to guarantee safety.
The retreat of ancient glaciers, extreme heat waves touching 49°C in Gilgit-Baltistan, and increasingly volatile freeze-thaw cycles are not distant threats – they are unfolding right now, destroying ecosystems, threatening vulnerable local communities, and taking human lives.
